JAMMU: Ignoring demand of JUTA as well as students and Civil Society members for CBI probe into death of Jammu University teacher Dr. Chandra Shekhar inside the campus, the police has constituted 4 members SIT headed by DySP rank officer under the default supervision of SP South.
The team comprised of SDPO South, SHO Gandhi Nagar, In-charge Police Post Nehru Market and one ASI will probe the circumstances which coerced a teacher of impeccable integrity and reputation to end his life in a tragic way inside the department of Psychology.
Taking jibe at JU administration on formation of SIT, renowned anti corruption crusader Prof. SK BHALLA told JK Global News “Ironically today is World Suicide Prevention Day and Jammu University has come out with flying colors. Orders issued without sufficient application of mind and in an unimaginable haste generate controversies. LG/CS are requested to get reconstituted the SIT as it has to probe into the questionable death of a University Professor”.
The terms of reference have not been spelt out as also the exact date by which the SIT would come forth with its report, added Prof Bhalla
Reacting to the development, the JUTA President Prof. Pankaj Srivastav has said that entire teachers of Jammu University are anguished over the way CASH committe concluded its preliminary probe at neck speed against our deceased teacher fellow without seeking explanation from him and promptness of university authorities in dashing suspension letter.
“Nothing less then CBI inquiry is acceptable to us apart removal of everyone from their positions who acts in haste without following due procedure of law” , said JUTA President, Prof. Pankaj Srivastav.
Even majority of teachers in JU termed this SIT as an eyewash. “This is nothing but a lollypop. The JUTA needs to wake up”, said a female Professor of varsity PG Law Dept in anger.
The Vice- Chancellor of JU, Prof. Umesh Rai who as per spouse of deceased teacher allegedly admitted of being kept in dark on the issue, however expressed his faith in SIT and quickly rejected demand of CBI probe.
Meanwhile, the students in JU on Friday boycotted their classes and held protest demonstration in support of CBI probe into death of Associate Professor of Post Graduate department of Psychology in JU.
The teachers of JUTA also lodge their protest by tieing black badges and observing token pen down strike for one hour in the campus.
Blaming the JU administration for adopting discriminatory and oppressive attitude towards a promising Prof. Chandra Shekhar belonging to the dalit community, the BSP also held protest demonstration in front of Press Club Jammu demanding CBI probe and stern action those responsible for his death. “Oppressive behaviour of a gang in JU is responsible for death of Prof Chandra Shekhar. Only CBI probe can deliver justice to him and everyone subjected to harassment by a coterie of tyrants in JU” said Pritam Chand, State General Secretary, BSP.
Expressing his annoyance on stinking affairs which is responsible for loss of a talented resource in JU, a retired Professor who also served as Registrar said” The recent incident on JU campus is most unfortunate and shameful. It is obvious that the sycophants in the administration created the situation with no other choice than to end the life”.
The shameful incident has allowed the society to keep into the suffocating atmosphere prevailing on the campus where coterie dominate and run the administration. The VCs with administrative authority to deal with delicate situations with wisdom and maturity are sitting blindfold leaving the entire ground for rats to jump around. The delay on part of VC to take administrative action against all those who prime facie are responsible to provoke the deceased, speaks volume on the dormant role of the authority. Very unfortunate” he further said.
