Indulgence of students in criminal acts in the college premises warrants rustication. Suspension is a relief and not punishment.
JAMMU: With the belated complaint of allegations of sexual harassment has surfaced against the victim, the shocking incident of thrashing of a first year student inside the premises of the Government Gandhi Memorial Science College has snowball into a major controversy.
This twist in the unfortunate incident which has painted the college in a bad light has sent shock waves among the victim’s parents as well as students and a section of college teachers.
Many in the college believe that this is allegedly a pressure tactics being engineered at the behest of accused students to defuse the matter against them.
Confirming this development, Principal GGM Science College, Prof. Romesh Kumar Gupta told JK Global News, “On behalf of victim, the police already registered an FIR. On our part, we have taken a bold stand by suspending all the five students involved in this heinous matter”. When further probed whether complaint of sexual harassment against the victim was filed before or after the thrashing incident, he fumbled for words and replied, “Convenor of Case against Sexual Harassment (CASH) committee, Prof. Jatinder Kour is enquiring the matter and she will better provide you the details”
Aggrieved over this strange development, scores of college teachers on the condition of anonymity said, “Allegations of sexual harassment may be true but the timing is apparently suspect”. Moreover, victim student has suffered serious multiple maxio-facial injuries and mere suspension is an eyewash exercise for such a serious crime.
Further, number of students, on not being quoted by names fearing backlash informed that the first year student who was beaten mercilessly used to play games on mobiles during vacant period and never indulge in any anti-social activities. In fact, he was being harassed by the accused seniors for the past sometime to flaunt their goondaism.
When contacted, Prof. Jatinder Kour, Convenor CASH Committee, said “To ensure no one faces injustice we are verifying the authenticity of plaint”, adding the details cannot be shared as this is a confidential matter”.
