MUMBAI: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was injured after an assailant attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon near a gurdwara in Nanded, Maharashtra, on Thursday. Badal reportedly sustained an injury to his hand, while a member of his security detail was also hurt during the incident.
The attacker was overpowered and taken into custody, while police launched an investigation to ascertain the motive behind the attack.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered a probe into the incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reportedly spoke to SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal and enquired about her husband’s health.
The attack has triggered serious concerns over the security arrangements surrounding the Akali Dal chief.
