BHOPAL: Tension prevailed in Ujjain on Monday as residents and members of the Muslim community protested against the proposed removal of a portion of the historic Shahi Masjid for a road-widening project ahead of Simhastha 2028. The protest intensified after a large crowd gathered at the site to oppose the proposed action.
The situation turned tense when protesters and police clashed, with stone-pelting reported from the area. Police responded with tear-gas shells and lathicharge to disperse the crowd, while Rapid Action Force personnel were deployed amid heightened security.
The administration has proposed widening the road to 15 metres, with parts of the mosque falling within the alignment. Community members have opposed the move and urged authorities to exclude the religious structure from the road-widening exercise.
The confrontation comes as the dispute is being contested legally, with the matter before the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Heavy police deployment continues around the area as authorities seek to maintain order.
