CHANDIGARH: Tension at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara eased on Monday after violent student protests over an alleged sexual-assault incident led to clashes with police, arson and damage to property.
Police resorted to lathicharge after protesters allegedly blocked NH-44 and pelted stones at security personnel. Several vehicles were damaged, with two police vehicles reportedly set on fire. The highway, which remained disrupted for several hours, has since been reopened, while heavy security continues around the campus.
Amid the unrest, LPU has suspended regular classes for 10 days from September 28 and postponed mid-term examinations until further notice. Students have also been allowed to return to their hometowns if they wish.
Police have registered a case over the sexual-assault allegation and constituted a Special Investigation Team. The university has denied the allegation, describing it as baseless. Authorities are continuing efforts to restore normalcy on the campus.
