Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other Opposition MPs were among those detained near Jantar Mantar on Wednesday while protesting over electoral-roll revision and demanding the CEC’s resignation.
The Congress described the crackdown as a “black day” and announced further mobilisation. The protests have centred on allegations concerning the electoral process, including the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
The developments have added to the growing political confrontation between the Opposition and the government over the functioning of the Election Commission.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is also set to examine a plea seeking recall of its split verdict concerning the law governing the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners
