The vessel was commissioned in Mumbai on Monday. The induction forms part of India’s efforts to expand its indigenous naval capabilities and improve surveillance in strategically important maritime areas.
Shallow-water anti-submarine warfare craft are designed to operate in coastal environments, where detecting and tracking submarines can be particularly challenging. Their role includes helping protect ports, coastal approaches and other sensitive maritime installations.
The commissioning also highlights the Navy’s continuing focus on specialised platforms suited to India’s maritime security requirements. With growing attention on underwater threats and the protection of coastal infrastructure, such vessels are expected to contribute to surveillance and operational readiness.
The induction of Mangrol adds another indigenous platform to the Navy’s expanding fleet of shallow-water anti-submarine warfare craft.
