Yeddyurappa stakes claim to form govt in Karnataka

Bengaluru: BJP newly elected MLAs have chosen BS Yeddyurappa as their leader. Yeddyurappa has met the Governor Vajubhai Vala and staked claim to form the government in Karnataka.

“The party has chosen me. I have given the letter to the Governor and he will call me, that is what I am hoping. He told me that he will take an appropriate decision. I’ll inform you after I receive a letter from Governor,” said BS Yeddyurappa, after meeting Governor Vajubhai Vala on Wednesday.

Earlier today in the morning, BJP for the first time openly claimed that “there is discontent among the elected MLAs in Congress and JD(S), who are not happy with the alliance and willing to join BJP”.

“People want BJP govt and we will form it. Anyone can create unnatural tensions, but people of Karnataka are with us. After meeting, we will take necessary steps. This attempt made by Congress to make a backdoor entry is not appreciated by the people of Karnataka,” said Union Minister Prakash Javadekar who is BJP in-charge of Karnataka.

Prakash Javadekar has termed Congress-JD(S) alliance as “unethical marriage of convenience”.

BJP emerged as the single largest party in Tuesday’s results of Karnataka’s high-stake state elections but fell agonisingly short of crossing the halfway mark, triggering suspense and drama through the day over who will rule the crucial southern state.

The fractured mandate prompted Congress to join hands with rival and third-placed JD(S) to somehow keep BJP from coming to power.

BJP got 104 seats out of 222 for which polling took place on Saturday. Ruling Congress was reduced to 78. JD(S) managed 37 seats.
