Pensioners Day-A wake up call to deliver

    Prof S.K.Bhalla

Today is National Pensioners Day and it is a welcome relief that in my living memory that Jammu and Kashmir Bank has thanked all esteemed pensioners for having reposed trust in the aforesaid bank. Furthermore J&K Bank has blessed pensioners with good health and happiness.

As per the information available  every year on “17th December in India, is a tribute to D.S. Nakara, the pioneer who fought relentlessly for the rights and dignity of pensioners. This day commemorates the landmark Supreme Court judgment of 1982, which guaranteed equality and justice for retired officials and pensioners”.

So far so good. There is another dimension of the pensioners day in my humble opinion as pensioners being the experienced folk of the civil society are not supposed to bask in the glory of the sun shine but contribute their mite for the well being of the present and future generations. It is heart warming that every month a message from the bank for the crediting of the pension gives psychological boost to all pensioners but we are duty bound as per the spirit of the constitution to render an honest account of our post retirement exercises for the larger public good.

Let us remember in all earnest the fight of D.S.Nakara, a retired defense personel who fought for our rights and dignity. It pricks my heart to see that majority of our pensioners are confined to their homestead only and cursing their fate.
