New Delhi : The 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi ended with the adoption of the New Delhi Declaration, marking an important effort by the expanded grouping to present a common position on major global challenges, including conflicts, terrorism, trade and reforms in international institutions.
The declaration called for restraint, dialogue and diplomatic engagement to resolve conflicts, while expressing concern over the worsening situation in West Asia. It also underlined the need to protect civilians and ensure humanitarian assistance reaches those affected by conflicts.
For India, the declaration assumes particular importance as BRICS members condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and reiterated their opposition to terrorism in all its forms, including its financing and support networks. The reference strengthens New Delhi’s diplomatic position on the issue.
The summit also renewed the demand for greater representation of developing countries in global decision-making bodies, including the United Nations Security Council. This reflects the broader BRICS push for a more representative and balanced international system.
The significance of the New Delhi Declaration extends beyond the summit itself. With its expanding membership and growing economic influence, BRICS is increasingly emerging as a platform through which the Global South seeks a stronger role in shaping the global agenda.
