COLOMBO: Raising alarming bells in India and US, the controversial Chinese ship Yuan Wang 5 reached Sri Lanka’s Hambantota port on Tuesday morning.
Though China claims that Yuan Wang 5, that China claims is a research vessel, the security analysts has dubbed it as a “spy ship”. The Pentagon says Yuan Wang ships are operated by the Strategic Support Force of the People’s Liberation Army.
There were apprehensions in New Delhi about the possibility of the vessel’s tracking systems attempting to snoop on Indian defence installations while being on its way to the Sri Lankan port. US too had raised concerns owing to the ship’s surveillance capabilities.
