JAMMU : Tension prevailed in the Chakroi area of R.S. Pura after 32-year-old Uttam Chand, a resident of Rakh village, died after allegedly falling unconscious at Chakroi Police Post, triggering angry protests by his family members and villagers.
Chand had reportedly been taken to the police post in connection with a complaint over a property dispute. He was shifted to Sub-District Hospital, R.S. Pura, around 4 am and later referred to GMC Jammu, but died while being taken to the hospital. His body was kept in the mortuary for post-mortem.
Family members and locals alleged custodial assault and demanded an impartial investigation, raising serious questions over the circumstances leading to his death.
SP Headquarters Anna Sinha, who reached the spot, assured the protesters that both departmental and magisterial inquiries had been ordered. She said every aspect of the incident would be examined and assured that any wrongdoing or lapse established during the probe would invite action under law.
Four police personnel posted at the Chakroi post have reportedly been attached to headquarters pending inquiry.
