CJI Surya Kant’s Invite Triggers Student Boycott Threat

A section of outgoing students of the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), Hyderabad, has opposed the proposed participation of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant as chief guest at the university’s convocation, with some students indicating they may boycott the ceremony if the invitation is retained. The students have reportedly written to the university administration, urging it to reconsider the decision.

The opposition stems from concerns over remarks made by Justice Surya Kant during proceedings concerning alleged police action against student protesters at Jantar Mantar in July. Students have expressed dissatisfaction with the CJI-led bench’s handling of the matter, particularly remarks made during the hearing.

The development has triggered a debate on campus over judicial accountability, freedom of expression and the role of dissent in a democracy. NALSAR has not publicly announced the final convocation date or confirmed whether Justice Surya Kant will attend as chief guest.
