JAMMU: Accusing the Congress of attempting to undermine democratic institutions to secure political power outside the electoral process, BJP National Vice-President Ram Madhav on Tuesday alleged that the opposition party was using the controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to create political instability in the country.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters in Trikuta Nagar, Madhav charged that Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi were spreading misinformation about SIR because they could not challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP through democratic elections.
Describing SIR as a constitutional exercise aimed at removing duplicate entries, deceased voters and other ineligible names from electoral rolls, he questioned the Congress’s claim that around 13 crore voters had been deleted and challenged the opposition to produce even one person whose name had been wrongly removed.
Madhav further alleged that the Congress was looking towards developments in Bangladesh and Nepal as models for bringing about regime change in India through unrest rather than democratic means.
He maintained that the Election Commission had followed a constitutional procedure and that genuine grievances could be addressed through the prescribed mechanism.
