SRINAGAR: The J&K Legislative Assembly’s Autumn Session opened on a stormy note on Monday, with slogan-shouting and protests disrupting proceedings and forcing the House to adjourn for the day within about an hour.
The session began with obituary references, but the calm was short-lived as BJP legislators entered the Well and raised issues including the demands of NHM employees and daily wagers, electricity tariff and alleged failures of the Omar Abdullah government.
The treasury benches responded by raising the demand for restoration of statehood, triggering heated exchanges between the ruling and opposition sides. Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather repeatedly urged members to return to their seats and allow Question Hour to continue.
Despite his appeals and warnings, the protests persisted, with members engaging in counter-sloganeering and sharp exchanges.
The House was eventually adjourned for the day around 11 am, leaving the seven-sitting Autumn Session’s opening day largely consumed by political confrontation rather than legislative business.
