PANAJI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday unveiled a three-year roadmap aimed at making India drug-free by 2029, calling for a coordinated nationwide campaign against narcotics.
Addressing a press conference during his three-day Goa visit, Shah said the government has significantly strengthened anti-drug enforcement since 2019, with greater focus on intelligence sharing, financial investigations, interdiction and rehabilitation.
According to him, agencies seized more than 1.19 crore kg of narcotics worth nearly Rs 1.89 lakh crore between 2014 and 2024, while over 48.66 lakh kg of drugs were destroyed.
The new strategy rests on four priorities: intelligence-led enforcement, curbing precursor and synthetic drugs, reducing demand and harm, and improving institutional coordination.
Over the next three years, the government aims to dismantle 100 international and inter-state drug networks, bring back 100 fugitives and destroy 100 clandestine drug laboratories.
The campaign will target 50 crore people, create one lakh ‘Nasha Mukt Mitras’ and expand de-addiction facilities to 1,751 centres. Shah urged Goa’s authorities, media and citizens to actively support the anti-narcotics campaign.
