JAMMU : The Jammu Newspaper Editors Guild on Tuesday raised allegations of extortion linked to illegal construction cases in Jammu, pointing fingers at some officials of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and persons allegedly associated with media houses.
Addressing a press conference, the Guild voiced concern over the alleged misuse of illegal construction cases for extortion. However, while maintaining sensational claims, the Guild did not present evidence identifying those allegedly running the racket.
Claiming that the extortionists are demanding money to the tune of Rs 50 lakh, the Guild asserted the need for transparent enforcement of building regulations and action against illegal constructions must follow due process. It should neither become a tool for harassment nor provide cover for alleged wrongdoing, asserted Guild.
The concerned authorities need to examine the allegations impartially and act wherever violations are established. A clear response from the JMC would also help address the concerns raised at the press conference, added Guild spokesperson.
