    Jammu’s Whistleblower Gen Alpha

Two consecutive student protests, within two days, at Government Higher Secondary School Channi Himmat and Government High School Lower Chowadi should deeply concern the administration. When teenagers themselves take to the streets in protest against teachers and school heads, it signals a serious erosion of trust in institutions meant to educate, guide and protect them.

The allegations raised, particularly by female students at Chowadi, warrant a fair and time-bound inquiry. The fact that Gen Alpha students are expressing their anger and grievances so openly inside what should be a temple of learning itself reflects the depth of their frustration. The concern assumes greater significance against the backdrop of the shocking Chatroo case involving allegations against a government teacher concerning a minor student. Though the incidents may be unrelated, together they underline the urgent need for stronger supervision, accountability and student-safety mechanisms.

At a time when CM Omar Abdullah is seeking to boost Gross Enrolment Ratio in government schools in Jammu and Kashmir UT, young minds who will shape Viksit Bharat need safe schools, responsible mentors and dignity, not fear or distrust. A stitch in time saves nine. Hopefully, CM Omar Abdullah and Education Minister Sakina Itoo will take note before such concerns deepen.
