JAMMU: Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has launched a series of environment-friendly and citizen-centric initiatives aimed at strengthening sustainable urban infrastructure and improving public spaces under the visionary leadership of Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav.

In a significant move to protect the holy Tawi, popularly known as Surya Putri, JMC on Friday has initiated the installation of immersion receptacles on Tawi Bridge.

The facility will allow devotees to deposit religious offerings and other ritual material without directly polluting the river, helping preserve its ecological health and sanctity.

Adding another dimension to its waste-management initiatives, JMC, in collaboration with the District Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, has installed an on-site Aerobin at Gurudwara Maharani Chand Kaur.

This will scientifically process wet waste generated from the daily Langar into nutrient-rich compost for use in parks, green belts and urban gardens. The model promotes decentralised, odour-free composting and reduces the burden on landfill sites.

In another citizens centric initiative, the JMC in league with JSCL has recently constructed 109 passenger sheds at designated e-bus stops, providing much-needed shelter and convenience to commuters. The initiative complements the city’s growing electric public transport network and reflects the Corporation’s focus on making public infrastructure more accessible, comfortable and commuter-friendly.

Meanwhile, JMC on Friday has inaugurated a Net Zero Cooling Station at the Suryaputri Tawi Riverfront. Powered entirely by solar energy, the facility provides relief to visitors while demonstrating the potential of renewable energy in developing sustainable and citizen-friendly public infrastructure.

The series of recent initiatives has drawn appreciation from citizens, who see the JMC’s renewed focus on sustainable infrastructure, scientific waste management and improved public amenities as a positive step towards transforming Jammu’s urban landscape.

“These initiatives show that Jammu is gradually moving towards a cleaner, greener and more citizen-friendly future,” said Prof. Yashpal Kundal.

Together, the initiatives reflect JMC’s growing focus on cleanliness, waste reduction, renewable energy, environmental protection and sustainable urban development, giving a fresh direction to Jammu’s civic landscape.
