In a move aimed at speeding up justice delivery, the Lok Sabha on Monday approved the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026. The legislation raises the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges from 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India. The government said the expansion would help reduce the growing backlog of cases and enable the apex court to dispose of matters more efficiently, strengthening the country’s judicial system.
