KISHTWAR: Widespread protests and a complete shutdown of commercial establishments were witnessed in Chatroo and adjoining Mughalmaidan areas of Kishtwar district following the death of a 14-year-old schoolgirl, triggering public outrage and demands for stringent action against those allegedly responsible.
Large numbers of residents, joined by social and civil rights activists, staged protests and blocked roads while demanding speedy justice and exemplary punishment for the accused. The local Traders Association also supported the protest by observing a complete market shutdown.
According to allegations in the case, a government school teacher, identified as Khalid Hussain, allegedly sexually exploited the minor student, resulting in her pregnancy.
It is further alleged that, after learning about the pregnancy, the accused, along with his brother Tariq Hussain, attempted to terminate it by allegedly administering unauthorised medicines.
The girl’s condition reportedly deteriorated following the alleged abortion attempt. She was taken to District Hospital Kishtwar and later referred to Government Medical College, Jammu, but reportedly died while being shifted near Batote.
Police have arrested both accused and registered a case under FIR No. 34/2026 at Police Station Chatroo. A copy of the FIR was reportedly handed over to the victim’s family, following which the protesters dispersed to allow the final rites.
The incident has sparked serious concern over the safety and protection of girl students in schools, with civil society members demanding a thorough investigation and strict action against all those found involved.
