Delhi: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday met Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Yadav at AIIMS in Delhi where the latter is currently undergoing treatment.
Lalu, who is serving a jail term in connection with the fodder scam, was admitted to AIIMS last month for treatment for various ailments related to heart and kidney. He was referred to AIIMS by the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Ranchi.
The RJD chief had been admitted to RIMS in Ranchi on March 17 over complaints of uneasiness while he was lodged at the Birsa Munda Jail in Ranchi. Prasad has been serving a jail term since December 23.
At AIIMS, he has had several high profile visitors including his son Tejashwi Yadav who had expressed concern over his father’s health.
Earlier, Lalu’s wife and former Bihar CM Rabri Devi had alleged that the government was plotting to kill her husband. “My husband’s condition is deteriorating and I don’t know if it is due to illness or medicines are being administered to kill him as his sugar level is rising. How can I trust the government?” she had said.
The former chief minister has been convicted in four fodder scam cases since 2013 — the latest being the Dumka treasury case, in which a special CBI court sentenced him to 14 years in jail.
The Jharkhand high court, which is hearing Lalu’s bail pleas, has also sought a report on his medical condition from AIIMS-Delhi. Lalu’s counsel says he suffers from multiple problems including high sugar and creatinine levels.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O’ Brien also met with Lalu earlier this month.
Last year in November, Rahul had met Tejashwi over lunch, triggering speculations about changing political equations in Bihar.
