Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has stressed that the delimitation exercise should begin well in advance to ensure implementation of the women’s reservation law in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Rijiju said timely completion of the exercise would be crucial for translating the constitutional provision reserving one-third of seats for women into reality. The women’s reservation law, passed by Parliament in 2023, links its implementation to delimitation following the first Census conducted after its enactment. The government’s position has renewed focus on the timeline for delimitation and the steps required before the 2029 general elections.
