    Road safety awareness week begins in Kashmir

    Srinagar: A host of awareness functions including rallies, seminars, debates and quiz competitions were held across the Kashmir Division today to mark the 29th Road Safety Week aimed to highlight the need for safe driving practices.

    The theme for the road safety week this year is ‘Sadak Suraksha – Jeevan Raksha’.

    At Srinagar: The Regional Transport Office Kashmir today organized an awareness rally which was flagged-off by RTO, Kashmir Khurshid Ahmad Shah.

    Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Riyaz Ahmad Wani and SSP Traffic Tahir Gilani were also present on the occasion.

    At Baramulla: District commissioner Dr. Nassir Ahmad Naqash flagged off a road show organized by Motor Vehicles Department which marked the overwhelming response of transporters and other sections of the society.

    The DC emphasized upon the need for adopting necessary road safety measures for averting avoidable road accidents and loss of precious human life. He also appealed people particularly driver fraternity to avoid rash and aggressive driving and follow the traffic rules strictly.

    He also hailed the transport department for organizing such programmes and stressed the need for holding awareness camps at the grassroot level.

    At Budgam: The week commenced with road safety awareness rally organized by Assistant Regional Transport office flagged-off by CPO Budgam, Abdul Rasheed in presence of ARTO Budgam, DySP Traffic Rural and DySP Headquarters.

    The participants were carrying banners and placards highlighting safety measures for the awareness of the general public.

    Earlier, while chairing a meeting attended by the officials from ARTO office, Traffic and Police departments, civil society members, transporters, school children, CPO Budgam said that it was the responsibility of every individual to contribute for the smooth regulation of transport on the roads.

    At Pulwama: Additional Deputy Commissioner Showkat Ahmad Rather kick-started the safety week by flagging-off a rally to spread awareness among the people regarding traffic rules.

    On the occasion, ADC said that traffic accidents have increased in the state. He said such a situation demands strict enforcement of traffic rules and awareness among the general public about safe driving.

    At Bandipora: Member Legislative Assembly Bandipora, Usmaan Majid inaugurated a programme organized by Motor Vehicles Department during which he flagged-off a rally from Mini Secretariat here comprising 200 students.

    The rally went through various markets of Bandipora town to create awareness among masses about the road safety measures.

    At Kulgam: Deputy Commissioner Kulgam Sajad Hussain today inaugurated the road safety week organized by Motor Vehicles Department.

    The DC also flagged- off a bike rally from Mini Secretariat here comprising around 200 bikers from different parts of the district.

    Speaking on the occasion, DDC emphasized on the importance of road safety and need to disseminate the information among the public especially youth. He stressed upon the department to continue such activities so that the message reaches grass root level. He also appealed the people to follow traffic rules to avoid traffic accidents.

    At Anantnag: the 29th Road Safety Week was organized by the Motor Vehicle Department Anantnag in collaboration with Traffic Police with the flagging-off a bike rally by ARTO Anantnag.

    On the occasion, ARTO Anantnag said various kinds of awareness programmes would be held across the district.

    While giving the details of the week-long activities, the ARTO said that free eye checkup and training programmes for commercial drivers, painting competitions in various schools regarding road safety, training of commercial drivers regarding life-saving and first aid techniques by experts, distribution of pamphlets and other awareness programmes will be held.

    At Shopian: To stimulate community involvement in promoting road safety awareness and to disseminate information about traffic rules, the Motor Vehicle Department Shopian organized the 29th Road Safety week here today in which Deputy Commissioner Gazanfar Ali was the chief guest.

    At Kargil:  Chairman and Chief Executive Councilor Kargil Kacho Ahmad Ali Khan launched the 29th Road Safety Week celebrations by flagging-off an awareness rally at Tourist Facilitation Center (TFC) here today.

    The Safety Week would be featuring an array of programmes focusing on awareness of road safety, traffic rules and prevention of accidents.

    The CEC accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner Kargil Haji Gulzar Hussain, Superintendent of Police TseringGylapo, Additional Superintendent of Police Arun Gupta, Additional Deputy Commissioner Kargil ImteeazKacho, Assistant Regional Transport Officer Haji Muhammad Baqir and other concerned officers emphasized the need for following traffic rules, wearing helmet, avoiding use of mobile phones while driving and rash driving.
