NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has stepped up the Centre’s attack on Punjab’s drug menace, promising to track down those involved in the illegal chitta trade and put them behind bars.
Shah is scheduled to meet families of people who recently died after raising their voices against drug trafficking in Mansa, Sangrur and Gurdaspur. His intervention follows the killing of anti-drug activists Parvinder Singh Jhota and Bikramjit Singh, besides the suicide of Gulzar Singh, whose son was battling drug addiction.
Shah accused the Punjab government of failing to prevent the state from sliding deeper into drug abuse. He said attempts to silence those opposing the trade would not succeed and vowed a sustained crackdown on the network.
