New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday reiterated India’s position that disputes must be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy as he held talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit 2026 in New Delhi.

The two leaders reviewed recent developments in West Asia, with Modi stressing the importance of sustained diplomatic efforts to restore lasting peace and stability in the region. He also underlined the need to protect freedom of navigation and international commerce, besides ensuring the safety and well-being of seafarers.

Modi appreciated Iran’s continued high-level participation in BRICS engagements despite the difficult regional circumstances. He said the grouping could play an important role in promoting resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability among countries of the Global South.

The Prime Minister also thanked Pezeshkian for taking part in the Leaders’ Session of the BRICS Business Forum.

Separately, Modi held a bilateral meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the summit, with discussions focusing on issues of mutual and global concern.
