NAIROBI : At least 153 people were killed after a drone strike hit a busy market in the disputed Abyei region along the Sudan-South Sudan border, triggering a massive fire at a nearby fuel depot, officials said.
The attack on Amiet Market occurred on Monday, with the death toll rising sharply as rescuers recovered bodies from the blaze. South Sudanese officials blamed Sudan’s military for the strike, though the allegation could not be independently verified. Sudan’s military said the operation targeted fuel supplies allegedly linked to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The strike has added to a surge of violence linked to Sudan’s civil war, which began in 2023. More than 8,000 people were reportedly displaced following the attack.
