JERUSALEM: Israel is facing a major political transition after President Isaac Herzog tasked opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot with forming the country’s next government.
The move follows the October 27 election, which failed to deliver a clear parliamentary majority and weakened Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political position. Eisenkot has secured the backing of 67 lawmakers and now has six weeks to build a governing coalition.
However, negotiations could prove challenging, particularly over partnerships with Arab parties and ultra-Orthodox factions. If Eisenkot fails to assemble a coalition, Netanyahu could get another opportunity, potentially bringing Israel closer to another election.
