New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Saturday appeared before a court in Delhi in connection with his wife Sunanda Pushkar’s death case, after he was summoned as an accused on July 7.

The court converted anticipatory bail to regular bail after the Congress leader furnished the bail bond of Rs. 1 lakh.

“There’s no requirement to file a formal bail. Anticipatory bail had been granted by the sessions court,” said the judge.

Tharoor had moved the court for anticipatory bail apprehending arrest, which the court granted him on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Shashi Tharoor’s counsel opposed the applications moved by Subramanian Swamy seeking court’s nod to allow him to assist the prosecution in the case and a direction to the police to produce the report of vigilance inquiry conducted earlier.

Tharoor’s counsels also questioned Subramanian Swamy’s locus standi in the case.

The court has set July 26, for the scrutiny of documents and consideration of the application.

Earlier, the Congress leader had promised to co-operate and said that charges against him were preposterous and baseless. “I will continue to vigorously contest these charges and maintain my steadfast conviction that ultimately the truth will prevail through the judicial system that we are privileged to have in our country,” Tharoor said.

The Delhi Police had on May 14 accused the Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram of abetting Pushkar’s suicide and told a city court that he should be summoned as an accused in the four-and-half year-old case, claiming there was sufficient evidence against him.

In a nearly 3,000-page charge sheet, the police named Tharoor as the only accused while also alleging that he had subjected his wife to cruelty. It had also urged the court to summon Tharoor as an accused.
