Work in the District Court Complex, Jammu, was affected on Saturday after members of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Jammu, staged a protest against an alleged attempt by a Srinagar Police team to arrest an advocate in connection with a criminal defamation case filed by J&K Sports Council Secretary Nuzhat Gul.
The protesting lawyers termed the police action within the court premises as an affront to the dignity of the legal fraternity and boycotted court proceedings. They also questioned the registration of the case in Srinagar and demanded an impartial inquiry into the matter.
The controversy relates to a criminal defamation case registered on the complaint of the Sports Council Secretary over allegations concerning recruitment under the sports quota.
Meanwhile, police maintained that the Srinagar team was acting in compliance with an arrest warrant issued by a competent court and denied any procedural impropriety.
