NEW DELHI : The Lok Sabha on Monday passed the Bill to repeal the three farm laws passed last year.

Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar tabled the bill in the Lok Sabha which was passed by voice vote even as Leader of the Congress Aadhir Ranjan Chaudhary demanded that a debate be allowed.

The House was adjourned till Tuesday immediately after passing the Bill.

Speaker Om Birla promised that debate would be held once the House is in order. “Will give you appropriate time,” Birla said.

Monday was the first day of business in Lok Sabha when Tomar tabled the Bill called ‘The Fam Laws Repeal Act, 2021’.

The three laws to be repealed are: The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 to amend the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.

The government in the ‘objects of the bill’ defended the laws saying these had been framed for the overall socio-economic development after extensive consultations with various stakeholders.

The government said, “Though only a group of farmers are protesting against these laws, they have tried hard to sensitise the farmers and explain the merits of farm laws to them.”
