JAMMU : With lowering of guards against violators, the menace of cars with tinted glasses has resurfaced on roads at an alarming proportion in Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory.
This serious security lapse has been further allowed to turn more scary for citizens due to growing numbers of vehicles with masked number plates allowed to roam freely on roads.
Amidst the reports that nearly 150 terrorists are awaiting infiltration in our UT especially Jammu region to carry out their nefarious designs. This task would become easier for our enemies sitting across the border, if immediate remedial measures with iron hands are not taken against the rampant movement of cars with tinted films and masked number plates, says a senior officer of intelligence agency.
Floating order of the Supreme Court which in its verdict in 2012 has banned use of tinted glasses of any visibility in vehicles, the violators can be seen roaming around in city with impunity, said, Yudvir Singh, a resident of Jammu city.
There has been a sudden rise in use of tinted glasses which indeed is a safest mode of movement for gangsters, drug mafia, anti national and anti social elements, he added.
This is evident from the fact that recently a Thar car bearing a sticker of Punjab police that had tinted black glasses and used by the most wanted operator of drug mafia namely Lau Gujjar who reached upto Bishnah area in Jammu by safely crossing all police check posts from Pathankot. The police later seized the Thar car which was left by the dreaded criminal and narco smuggler after the later escaped the security cordon.
Expressing concern over the matter, a shopkeeper of Gandhi Nagar, Green Belt Park said, “At any given point of time, countless cars with opaque window glasses are seen moving freely in the area right under the nose of cops deployed in the area”. This is a deplorable state of affairs, he added.
The use of cars with banned tinted glasses is more practised by families of political leaders and cops, added another shopkeeper.
It is worth mentioning here that in August 2012, the Supreme Court had directed the police to ban use of films of any visual light transmission or any other material on safety glasses and the windscreen of vehicles.
Usage of tinted films of any visibility made it difficult to recognise anti national and anti social elements besides the unlawful activities behind dark go unnoticed, says, renowned social and anti corruption activist, Prof S.K.Bhalla.
Currently, there has been a tremendous increase in the number of vehicles with banned film glasses. The police need to act and seize all such cars to maintain sanctity of the Apex Court order as well as safety of the citizens, added Prof. Bhalla.
When apprised about this alarming state of affairs, SSP Jammu, Joginder Singh while refusing to admit it as a serious security lapse preferred to feign innocence and disconnected the call.
However, the DIG JSK range, Shiv Kumar Sharma appreciated the concern raised said that except protected persons none is authorised usage of tinted glasses in cars and strict action will be initiated against those found violating orders of Supreme Court.
