Fearing Modi’s popularity TDP opposes simultaneous polls, claims Ram Madhav

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National General Secretary Ram Madhav has reacted after TDP opposed the idea of holding simultaneous polls to Parliament and state assemblies.

The TDP said that the move was only to weaken regional parties and termed it as a gameplan of national parties to decimate the regional parties.

The party which snapped ties with the BJP in March this year over the issue of special category status for Andhra Pradesh said it was opposing simultaneous elections to safeguard the “federal system.”

However, reacting to TDP’s comment, Ram Madhav in a tweet said that this is actually about the fear of Modi’s popularity.

The TDP was the first to back Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s idea of simultaneous polls when it was a constituent of the BJP-led NDA.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam also backtracked on its support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s idea stating that current Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly should be allowed to complete its full tenure till 2021.

Last week, Odisha Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik announced his party’s support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposal. “We are elected to work for the people. Elections throughout the year disturb the development works. Therefore, we support simultaneous polls,” Patnaik said.

The Law Commission is holding consultations with all major political parties on July 7 and 8 to discuss the feasibility of conducting simultaneous Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections.

Seeking to find a common ground on the issue, the commission had written to the seven recognised national and 59 state parties to participate in the meeting scheduled over the weekend

Many political parties, including the Congress, confirmed that they have received an invitation, but were yet to make up their mind on whether to send their representatives to the meeting.
