The JMC is doing a commendable job in revolutionizing its working. Adding priority in identifying the right spot on road for dustbins and demarcating these slots with fluorescent paint besides wrapping dustbin with night reflector tape would add more value to their endeavours in transforming Jammu as Smart City.
JAMMU: There is no denying the fact that Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has initiated countless reforms in couple of years which apart from ensuring transparency and efficiency attributed in diminishing the gigantic monster of corruption in the organization.
However, the haphazardly placement of iron dustbins by negligent sanitation and transportation staff of JMC on road is predominantly playing the role of spoilsport and warrants SOS treatment without delay.
In entire JMC limit, there are nearly hundreds of compactor bins which are placed without demarcation of slots on roadside with the fluorescent paint. The worst, none of these dustbins carried night reflector tape, the practice which was earlier started 2 years ago and discontinued after sometime as it fails to attract the interests of some officials in the organization due to absence of commission in its purchase, alleged JMC sources.
“In absence of demarcated slots, the drivers of compactor trucks lift the loaded bins and after clearing left it in the middle of the road causing obstacle in the movement of vehicles besides endangering motorists’ life” complained Dr Anirudh, a resident of Green Belt Gandhi Nagar.
For whole day, the officers and officials of JMC several times passed by these disorganized dustbins but sadly no one ever bothered to attend to this serious problem, added Dr. Anirudh.
It’s worthwhile to mention here that a youth of Janipur 2 years ago had lost its entire jaws and survived after struggling for several months on death bed after his scooter got collided with a wrongly placed dustbin of JMC in Janipur area at night.
Residents in Shastri Nagar, Trikuta Nagar, Sainik Colony etc face similar issues every other day when, after clearing, compactor bins are placed back irregularly on road by reckless staff of JMC. Blaming the staff of sanitation, a resident of Greater Kailash said “Irregular placement of bins on road after emptying by compactor truck is being followed as practice instead of exception. On many occasions, we readjust them on own for the sake of motorists at night”
Urging the Commissioner JMC, Avny Lavasa to intervene in the matter, Naveen Abrol, a resident of Channi Himmat, said “The negligence on part of irresponsible staff may become cause of someone death. The authorities without delay must made the concerned officials of sanitation and transport wing accountable for irregular positioning of bins on roads in different areas of the city”. Imprint the JMC helpline numbers on all sides of dustbins will help citizens raised an alarm if any refuse compactor truck driver placed the bins recklessly on road, he suggested.
Expressing concern over the danger posed by improper positioning of bins on roads, agitated Randhir Singh of Karan Nagar said “The councilors of wards are more interested in matters which involved constructions and utilization of massive funds through contractors as well as three wheelers hired for lifting of garbage. Alike, JMC officials, they too are least bothered about such serious issues”.
