JAMMU : The much hyped multi crores Jammu Smart City Project where specially choosen employees are fed with silver spoon has so far miserably failed to illuminate the night lamps at several locations which were installed a long time ago in several parts of city.
Due to apathetic attitude of JSCL employees, the city roads during night which passes through deserted locations appears primitive in nature, leaving the pedestrians wary of their surroundings.
Money is lavishly being incurred by JSCL to make Jammu City looks “smart” but the reality check of objectives mentioned in this Special Purpose Vehicle project paints the working of JSCL gloomy, complained a renowned critics and RTI activist, Rajeshwar Singh Jamwal. This becomes more questionable when hefty paid employees of JSCL are headed by none other than an IAS officer, he added.
Raising serious safety and security concern, Khem Raj Sharma, a resident of Qasim Nagar told JK Global News that almost a year ago night lamps were installed on both sides of roads outside Qasim Nagar upto Balidhan Stambh but still the roads remained shrouded in darkness giving impression that theseĀ  antique looking lamps were only installed to adorn roads at day time instead of illumination during night.
Worst, the JMC also turn apathetic towards the street lights which were installed at median, complained another resident of Qasim Nagar namely Rajesh Singh.
During our interaction with citizens this sentiment is echoed throughout the city, where residents feel abandoned by a system that was supposed to protect them. More or less, our team during an extensive tour of city came across similar situation in other locations where either the JSCL’s night lamps were completely dysfunctional or illuminating at selective locations in haphazard manner.
Expressing concern about the working of JSCL, renowned anti corruption crusader, Prof S.K.Bhalla said, “In a civilized society, the civic authorities used commissioning of night lamps only to enhance public safety and modernised urban infrastructure. However, if the same were fixed only to adorn city roads sans illumination after spending crores from public exchequer then it is a biggest fraud which needs a probe without fear and favor”.
To me it seems either the firm engaged by JSCL for installation and operation of these night lamps is unquestionable due to its proximity in the corridors of powers or the authorities is indifferent towards the safety of pedestrians as well as roads user especially at vulnerable locations at night, emphatically added Prof Bhalla.
When apprised about the matter Deputy CEO, JSCL, Rakesh Gupta without giving any satisfactory reply pertaining to dysfunctional night lamps said “we will look into the matter”.
