NEW DELHI : A major protest demanding a review of India’s reservation policy unfolded at Jantar Mantar on Friday, with hundreds of people gathering under the banner of the “Reservation Hatao Andolan” to press for a shift away from caste-based quotas.
The protesters demanded that reservation and other affirmative-action benefits be linked primarily to economic conditions, arguing that government support should reach those facing genuine financial hardship. Several participants also called for a review of the existing reservation framework and the introduction of stricter “creamy layer” provisions.
The gathering drew heavy police deployment, with security personnel and paramilitary forces stationed around Jantar Mantar. The protest came despite Delhi Police earlier stating that no permission had been granted for a demonstration at the venue and that prohibitory orders were in force in the New Delhi district.
As protesters continued raising slogans and displaying banners in support of reservation reforms, police moved in and detained several demonstrators. Reports said more than 50 protesters were taken into custody.
The development has once again brought the politically sensitive issue of reservation to the centre of national debate, with demands for policy reforms likely to trigger fresh discussion across political and social circles.
