Headed by one of the most finest and honest officer of Indian Police Service T.Namgyal, IGP, the traffic wing of Jammu and Kashmir Police these days is seriously afflicted with recurring incidents of indiscipline and violence as some bulls in uniform are hitting the cars instead of regulating traffic on roads.
This indiscipline scaled alarming proportion under the supervision of SP traffic Pardeep Singh who was entirely managing traffic affairs in Jammu city until the posting of new SSP Traffic Shiv Kumar Sharma after prolong delay of three months.
The traffic department is mandated with job of regulating the traffic and penalising the violators on road and for this purpose the department has created nakas at every 500 meter in the city.
But, this passion of traffic cops is badly missing against the illegal auto stands that exist on both side of narrow road in Dounthly Road (Panjthirthi), opposite Rajiv Nagar on National Highway, illegal parking along National Highway on road side opposite Gandhi Nagar.
Even, the traffic cops are silent over illegal operation of large fleet of unfit trucks ferrying cement from Railway station stores besides tractor trollies running on road for commercial purpose with impunity under the nose of traffic authorities.
Summary of some past acts of shames –On Sep 18, one traffic cop at Nagrota TCP smashed window glasses of SUV with base ball stick resulting in serious injuries to eyes of a girl sitting inside. On Sep, 29-cop Saddam Hussain allegedly thrashed another cop Ravi Kumar in full view of the public at ill mannered traffic naka on busy narrow road in Kacchi Chawni. On Oct 5, traffic cop Saddam Hussain broken view mirror of a Renault Scala car when a journalist negotiating another car tries to stop his car for checking at ill managed traffic naka at Kacchi Chawni.
This is just a tip of an iceberg as picture is ugly on highway where several videos depicting corrupt acts of traffic cops earned wrath of the citizens in social media domain.
Surprisingly, neither law nor civilized norms allow the traffic cops in the UT J&K to indulge in such violent acts which can only be expected either from unlawful or mentally unfit persons on the road.
But, despite all this, except suspension, the police department has nothing good in hands to treat this malice which generally maligned the JKP and especially its traffic wing.
The intensity of misdeeds of bulls in uniform can be gauged from the fact that LG Manoj Sinha had recently warned the police to refrain from harassing citizens on the name of checking and taking laws into their own hands.
The intervention of LG Sinha is most expected as the Police is a disciplined institution where the weapon carrying cops and officers imparted training to shape them for helping public and ensuring security within the defined boundaries of law of the land.
Moreover, they are public servants and not goons in uniform to terrorise the law abiding citizens of the nation.
Now to accord respect to the LG Sinha warning, the police authorities need to do brain mapping of violence oriented cops instead of relying on old soft policy of suspension as there is no place for bulls in uniform with animal instinct in disciplined force.
