    Gurukul Sanctity Betrayed in Chatroo

Painful death of a teenage tribal student at Tehsil Chatroo in Kishtwar, allegedly after she was impregnated by her own school teacher and died during an abortion procedure, is not merely a crime that has shaken the Chenab Valley. It is a chilling betrayal of an institution entrusted with shaping and safeguarding young lives. In the revered Gurukul tradition, a teacher was regarded as a Guru-a guide, protector and moral compass. The sacred Guru-Shishya relationship rested on trust, purity and sanctity. A teacher was meant to illuminate young minds, not exploit innocence; to protect a pupil, not become the source of her suffering. Words fall short of expressing the unimaginable physical and mental agony endured by the poor girl, who was repeatedly raped and left pregnant by her teacher at the tender age of 14.

What makes the Chatroo tragedy even more disturbing is that it cannot be dismissed as an isolated stain. Over the years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed disturbing cases and allegations involving sexual harassment and exploitation of girl students by some beasts within the teaching fraternity in schools, colleges and universities. Such acts reflect a grave erosion of moral responsibility and bring disrepute to a profession traditionally held in the highest esteem. The anger sweeping across the Chenab Valley must not fade with protests and slogans. This tragedy must become a moment of reckoning. The safety and dignity of girl students cannot remain confined to rules on paper or addressed only after a tragedy strikes. Educational institutions need stronger safeguards, vigilant oversight and uncompromising accountability. Equally, this is a moment for serious introspection within the teaching community.

Those who have forgotten the propriety and responsibility of a Guru must remember: a teacher is entrusted not merely with education, but with the trust of a young life. When that trust is violated, it is not only a student who is betrayed, the conscience of society is wounded, and the sanctity of the Gurukul itself stands shattered.
