Brokering a compromise in a sexual exploitation case involving a physically challenged teenage boy at Ramgarh Police Station is not merely a case of professional misconduct. It points to a disturbing erosion of accountability within sections of the police force. Any attempt to strike a compromise between a vulnerable victim and the accused in a case that prima facie attracted the provisions of the POCSO Act amounts to a grave betrayal of public trust. Setting the record straight, men in uniform are custodians of the law and are in no way supposed to act as brokers on behalf of criminals.
Crimes against children cannot be negotiated away. They demand immediate legal intervention, protection of the victim and uncompromising prosecution. The suspension of the entire police station staff—from the SHO to the Munshi—by SSP Samba, Anuj Kumar, deserves appreciation. However, suspensions alone may not suffice given the gravity of the alleged lapses committed by those entrusted with upholding the rule of law.
This shocking incident comes amid recurring allegations of police personnel being linked to drug trafficking, shielding prostitution rackets and facilitating illegal spa centre operations. Such episodes repeatedly tarnish the uniform and weaken public confidence in law enforcement. If found guilty, those responsible deserve termination from service. The growing rot requires exemplary punishment, institutional cleansing and strict accountability to restore the credibility of the police force.
